<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - A Complete Guide to Whistle Recall Train Your Dog: - Unlike your voice, a whistle doesn’t carry stress, frustration, or panic.</image:title>
<image:caption>Many dogs who lose hearing later in life can still hear a whistle even when they can’t hear your voice. It travels farther than words and can be heard over crashing surf, heavy rain, or traffic. If your “come” cue has lost meaning (what we call a poisoned cue), a whistle gives you a fresh start. Think of the whistle as a neutral signal. It doesn’t scold or beg. It simply says, “Something wonderful is about to happen. Get here fast.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Go for a walk on a long-leash or off-leash if you’re in a safe, fenced area. The moment your dog checks in with you (looks at you), do your whistle pattern and reinforce with a jackpot of treats, praise and play. Release the dog to go be a dog and explore. The next time the dog checks in, whistle and reward! Repeat until your dog is automatically checking in with you every 30-60 seconds, then you’re ready to move on.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - The Myth of Dominance: What Neuroscience Reveals About Dog Behavior - The foundation of the alpha myth goes back to studies of captive wolves in the mid-20th century. In those artificial enclosures, unrelated wolves were thrown together in tight spaces. Predictably, they fought. Researchers concluded that wolf packs must be rigid hierarchies held together by constant battles for dominance. [1]</image:title>
<image:caption>The concept of “alpha wolf” is primarily attributed to, and popularized by, David Mech in his 1970 book “The Wolf: Ecology and Behavior of an Endangered Species,” which stayed in print for over fifty years.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - The Myth of Dominance: What Neuroscience Reveals About Dog Behavior</image:title>
<image:caption>He identified seven core emotional systems and two stand out in dog training and behavior: SEEKING – the dopamine-driven drive to explore, learn, and anticipate good things. PLAY – the joy system that produces bouncy movements, play bows, and goofy vocalizations. Both are intrinsically rewarding and reinforce learning,4 thus eliminating the need for dominance during training. [4]</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - More Than Manners: Why Brain Work Isn’t a Luxury - Back to the BASICS This is where the BASICS Framework comes in:</image:title>
<image:caption>Awareness (A): A “spoiled” dog is often just missing meaningful brain outlets—or they’re over-stimulated by their environment without the coping skills to manage it. Success (S): Every solved puzzle, every calm “find it,” is a success that teaches your dog learning and problem-solving is fun and rewarding. Brain work isn’t a luxury item on your dog’s wish list. It’s the foundation of a calmer, happier, more balanced companion. So let’s move from calling our dogs “spoiled,” to understanding that what they really need is proper brain work, not more stuff.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - Vagus Nerve Reset: Real Science or Just Shiny Hype? - The vagus nerve, also called cranial nerve X, is one of the longest and most important nerves in the body. It starts in the brain stem and travels through the neck and chest, connecting with major organs like the heart, lungs, stomach, and intestines. Its job is to carry messages between the brain and the body, regulating things like:</image:title>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - The Most Important Cue Your Dog Needs? Your Attention. - Bonding and Awareness</image:title>
<image:caption>Two key pillars of the BASICS Framework are at play here: Bonding happens through everyday micro-moments, not just the big adventures. Awareness is your ability to read your dog and respond with intention, not just reactivity. (Yep! The same thing we ask of our dogs.) When we shift from “what command should I use?” to “what is my dog doing right now and what do they need?”, we create space for communication, rather than control.</image:caption>

Even if your dog sleeps in hilariously awkward positions - sprawled out with legs in the air like they just don’t care - crate training can help them feel even more comfortable while giving you peace of mind when you can’t supervise them.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Wolves and Coyotes do NOT howl after they kill. That’s a common myth. They are usually yapping and howling to check-in with and find their pack, or clearly tell a neighboring pack that the area is occupied. When they kill, they are quiet! Create a quiet, cozy area away from the crowd with their bed or crate (train them to it FIRST) favorite toys, water, and treats and soothing music. <image:title>Dog Blog Articles - The myth of “no pull” equipment - MYTH: A harness will stop my dog from pulling!</image:title>
<image:caption>The common idea is that a back-clip harness may encourage pulling because of the way they allow dogs to leverage their strength, and a front-clip harness is more effective for discouraging pulling because it shifts the dog’s direction towards the handler, making pulling less rewarding. REALITY: A harness, in and of itself, does nothing to encourage or discourage pulling. It simply allows your dog to not crush their trachea if they pull hard.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - The myth of “no pull” equipment - MYTH: Pinch/Pronk/Choke Collars are self correcting and will stop pulling!</image:title>
<image:caption>REALITY: Pinch/Prong/Chock Collars are all based on the idea that causing discomfort or pain will teach your dog to stop doing something, in this case pulling. While the marketing seems attractive, over time, they can cause significant harm to the dog’s throat and neck, leading to injuries. The pain and discomfort can also cause tremendous fear or other behavior related problems later in life for the dog. And you’re still left with a dog that pulls on leash.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - The myth of “no pull” equipment - MYTH: Retractable leashes help dogs learn not to pull because they allow the dog freedom to explore, thus reducing their anxiety and need to pull.</image:title>
<image:caption>REALITY: Retractable leashes can make it very difficult for the dog to understand what behavior is expected because they are allowed to roam a certain distance and then stopped at that same distance another time because the human keeps changing the stopping point. The make is difficult for the handler to control the dog when the leash is fully extended and that often leads to unsafe situations.</image:caption>

If your dog is performing the behavior in a way you love, then you wait for them to be about to offer the behavior, say your cue ONCE, quietly and nicely. The way you give the cue POWER is that the dog must be able to attach a favorable, positive outcome to the behavior. This is called “Positive Reinforcement”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - My dog is reactive on leash… - So, let’s focus with leash reactivity.</image:title>
<image:caption>The basic concept to understand is that when a barrier restricts your dog from achieving their goal, and fulfilling their emotional needs, you may see behavior that we call “reactive”. Barriers are things like windows, fences, doors, gates, enclosed areas like crates or cars and, yep, tight leashes, leads and tethers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - My dog is reactive on leash… - Leash reactivity can start as early as your dog’s first time on leash.</image:title>
<image:caption>Often, as puppies, we let bring them out and about in an attempt to “socialize” our pups and have them experience all types of sites and sounds. Unfortunately, if not done properly, we are actually teaching our dogs to behave poorly. Here are a couple of scenarios that may sound familiar.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - My dog is reactive on leash… - Start with a loose leash.</image:title>
<image:caption>You want to have a loose leash on your dog. All. The. Time. ALL. THE. TIME. <image:title>Dog Blog Articles - Your Dog IS Listening - What’s that you say?</image:title>
<image:caption>Puppies start trying to figure out what you are communicating from a very early stage. This looks like them cocking their head to one side, following you around, pawing your hand, biting your arm…it’s all puppy language for “HEY! I’m here! Teach me stuff!” The problem is that humans think like primates and dog’s are canines. They have an entirely different language. If you haven’t read “Crack the Code on your Dog’s Weird Behavior” or understand the ABC’S of how dog’s learn, you may want to start there. Once you understand HOW your dog takes in information and learns, or the ABC’S of Dog, you are on your way to being a great buddy for your dog. Now you’ll want to learn WHAT you are actually communicating to your dog.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - Front Door Chaos? Here’s an easy solution. - A simple reminder:</image:title>
<image:caption>Whatever your dog is allowed to practice, they will do more and more…and more…and more. In animal training and behavior terms, we call this pattern rehearsal. And rehearsing patterns is GREAT when it’s ultimately a behavior your want your dog to do…like sitting in front of you when you call them, or backing away from their bowl before feeding, or spinning, lunging and barking at the door when it rings. Oh, wait, scratch that last one!!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Choose safe ornaments. Opt for non-breakable or pet-safe ornaments to avoid glass or fragile decorations that could harm your dog if they break. Avoid edible ornaments. Decorations that resemble food, treats or even cute things like birdies and bunnies, may be tempting to your dog, so avoid using them on your tree. Tinsel and garlands: These can be hazardous if ingested by your dog. It’s best to choose an alternative so they are not even tempted, but if you must have the sparkle, hang them out of reach of your dog - even out of jumping reach!</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - Holiday Stress for Your Dog - Stress and your dog…</image:title>
<image:caption>The holiday season can be a source of stress for dogs due to changes in routine, increased activity, guests, and a lot of other stimuli. Remember your dog will show you signs of being stressed and it’s your job to listen to them just as you would any other family member. Your dog has an emotional bucket (the threshold of things they are equipped to handle) and that can fill up quickly. Keep in mind that your dog is not part of your planning and thinking process, so all the new things that show up around the holidays can be very weird and increase their energy and anxiety.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - Can my doggie eat veggies? - Sweet Potato Chew Recipe</image:title>
<image:caption>Home made Sweet Potato Chews are easy to make and won’t cost nearly as much as the $20 bag at the pet store. Simply cut sweet potatoes or yams into slices, about 1/2 inch thick, less for smaller dogs. Bake them at low heat (250 F) for an hour, turn them over and bake for another hour. Keep baking until they are dry and hard. You can bake at 300…but the idea is slow and long as if your are dehydrating them (and if you have a dehydrator, even better!) Leave them out to finish drying and cooling. If you dried them thoroughly, they they should last a long time and do not require refrigeration.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - The Art of Gratitude: Show Your Dog You Appreciate Them - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>While I’m always thankful I have my silly dogs, it’s great to actually remember how to show her! Right now, it’s Luna (yes, of Casa Luna Canines!) and even though she challenges my dog training efforts every day, she makes me laugh and smile and sleep in a little too late because she makes such a great pillow! Well, it’s time we all show our dogs some gratitude. And we can easily do this in a way the DOG understands and appreciates - you know, to make up for all the hugs, face smooshes, boops and head pats they have had to endure from us humans all year. Here are some ideas:</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - The Emotional Bucket - The Emotional Bucket</image:title>
<image:caption>We think of it as a “place” you store all of your feelings and reactions, BOTH positive and negative. Each interaction can start to fill up that emotional bucket. It can be excitement, fear, anger, confusion, happiness, frustration, enthusiasm...ALL of them. Each interaction adds a "thing" to your emotional bucket. Think of those "things" as rocks. Some are big, some are small. Sometimes we don't know what size they are. Some are gems, some are dirt. And, as our bucket fills up, it can get pretty hard to function because it's heavy and we can't see everything in it. We have to empty our bucket!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sooo cute, Right? No! Actually, this dog’s life is in danger in so many ways. She could be hit by a flying object, a rock, even a but. She could be thrown from the car in an accident or even in a hard stop. She could see something really cool and jump out at a stop sign or even when you are full speed down the road. <image:title>Dog Blog Articles - Do I have to use treats when I train my dog? - The short explanation of why we use rewards is to reinforce your dog’s good behavior with something they like.</image:title>
<image:caption>That’s it. We can’t stop a dog from doing a behavior because dogs do not understand ‘good’ vs ‘bad’ behavior. They only know “this is rewarding, I’ll keep doing it” or “this is not very rewarding, not really worth my effort”. Yes, it can get more complex than that but the foundation remains the same. We reinforce the behaviors we want and don’t reward the behaviors we dislike. Punishment, correction and yelling just don’t work for dogs!</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - Too Much, Too Soon - Are you shaping focus and safety—or bribing your way through a meltdown?</image:title>
<image:caption>If your dog is pulling, barking, or showing stress signals, it’s time to head home. Play some brain games. Add small distractions over time—like a doorbell, crumpling paper, or people passing at a distance. That is socialization. That is training. Even subtle changes—direction, background noise, your own body position—can challenge your dog’s brain in healthy ways. Don’t underestimate the power of small wins.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - Why we play games (and why they work!) - Dogs’ brains are made up of a lot of building blocks.</image:title>
<image:caption>In human learning, we call these ‘soft skills’ — communication, adaptability, teamwork, problem-solving. In dogs, we call them concepts — the brain-based building blocks that shape behavior. Through games, we grow these concepts just like we build emotional intelligence in ourselves.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Blog Articles - Why we play games (and why they work!) - How Games Shape Behavior</image:title>
<image:caption>At Casa Luna Canines, our focus is on brain work and behavior (some call it behavior modification or even B-Mod, if you’re into the whole brevity thing… ;-) ). Brain Work & Behavior games help the dog learn to adapt and respond to any given context or situation without the need for commands. It’s more like teaching your dog to make the right choice in real life — even when you’re not there. We train the brain.</image:caption>
