“But, my dog already has great manners! Why should I get Pub Dog Approved?”

Pub Dog Approved isn’t just a badge of honor—it’s a way to help build a more dog-friendly world.

When dogs show up calm, confident, and under control in public spaces, it creates better experiences for everyone - dog lovers and skeptics alike. Businesses feel more comfortable welcoming dogs, and outings become safer, smoother, and more enjoyable for all.

By completing the Pub Dog evaluation, you're not just proving your pup's manners, you’re setting a standard for responsible dog guardianship and helping make patios, cafes, and breweries more inclusive and relaxed for the whole community.

A well-mannered dog isn’t just a personal win. It’s a ripple effect of good behavior.

Are You and Your Dog Pub-Ready?

Let’s be real: Going out in public is NOT for every dog.

And truthfully, they’re not for every human either.

Some dogs would much rather stay home and binge-watch something with you (bonus points if snacks are involved). And when you do bring your dog along, remember—your outing is no longer just about you. You’ll need to tune into your dog’s needs and be willing to leave if they’re not having a good time.

But if you and your pup love being out and about together, here are a few guidelines to help decide if you’re ready for Pub Dog life:

Are YOU Ready?

  • Do you know your dog’s limits? You’ll need to read your dog’s signals and be willing to cut an outing short if they’re overwhelmed.

  • Do you have the right gear? Pub Dogs need a flat collar or harness - no prong, pinch, choke or shock collars needed to show off good behavior.

  • Are you considerate of others? Managing your dog’s space and interactions shows respect for people and pups.

So you may be Pub Dog Material…but is your dog?

Is Your Dog Ready?

  • Is your dog calm and collected in public? A Pub Dog can hang out and let the world go by…like a chill pub dog!

  • Can they greet other humans and dogs politely - or at least leave them alone? Pub Dogs don’t pull, lunge or show excessive excitement when greeting other people and dogs. They can give a polite sniff, a nod of the head and stroll on by without the drama.

  • Is your dog comfortable around noises and movement? Patios and cafes can be unpredictable. If you’re do can stay relaxed with people, clicking glasses and loud laughter…they’re ready to shine!

  1. Relax at the Table: Your dog remains calm (standing, sitting or laying down) for at least 2 minutes while you sign in and chat. No begging, barking or pacing - just calm, confident patio vibes!

  2. Stroll Without Struggle: Walk together on a loose leash along a guided path. Make a left turn, a right turn and a stop - just like you are headed to your table. No pulling, dragging or zigzagging.

  3. Navigate a Crowd: You and your dog move through a small group of people without jumping, surging forward or prolonged sniffing (you OR the dog!)

  4. Pass Another Pup Like a Pro: Walk past another dog at close range (2-3 feet away) without showing reactivity or losing focus. Your dog may acknowledge the other dog but shouldn't strain toward them or show signs of stress.

  5. Stay Calm in a Social Circle: Remain composed while gathered with 2-3 other people and their dogs for 1 minute. Dog may interact calmly but shouldn't bark excessively, jump up, or show signs of fear or aggression.

  6. Greet a Friendly Stranger: Stay relaxed as someone carrying a bag or unfamiliar item approaches, briefly greets the owner, sets the item down and asks to pet the dog (on the chest or rear). No jumping, excessive excitement, barking, growling, or hiding.

  7. Ignore the Temptations: Walk past food or a tempting item on the ground and respond to a “Leave It” cue without pulling or having to physically restrain the dog.

  8. Stay Put While You Step Away: Your dog holds a sit, down or stand stay (your choice) while you walk about 20 feet away, grab an item (like your drink or backpack) and return. A 20-foot long line is used as a safety measure.

  9. Come When Called - Even with Distractions: On the same 20-foot line, you leave your dog and then call them to you. The dog should come directly to you, even if something else interesting is nearby.

  10. Wait at Doorways or Go Through Politely: Show good door manners. Either wait until called through, walk calmly at your side, or go ahead and calmly walk through, then wait for you. It’s your choice, as long as it’s polite and under control.

Important: All dogs must wear a flat collar or harness - no prong, choke, shock, or slip leads allowed.
We celebrate cooperation, not control.

Not Ready for this level of Out And About?

That’s OK!

Not every person wants to take their dog everywhere, and most dogs honestly prefer a quieter life without all the noise, smells, and hustle of public places.

Getting Pub Dog Approved isn’t for every dog or every guardian. If you have any hesitation about your dog’s behavior or your own ability to manage them in public, trust your instincts. The kindest thing you can do might be leaving them safe and happy at home.

You’re also welcome to RSVP for an event, let us know you won’t be bringing your dog and just come to ask questions and check it out!

But that doesn’t mean the journey ends here. We’ve got a place for you to start.
